On 9 October 2026, the President of the Republic of Burundi, His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye, presided over the launching ceremonies for the implementation of the National Strategy against Corruption and Economic Maltreatment, adopted by the Council of Ministers on 7 January 2026.
On this occasion, the Burundian Head of State called for collective mobilization against practices that jeopardize the country’s development. In particular, he denounced the misappropriation of public resources, the attempts to subtract revenues from State funds, the collection of bribes and the failure to comply with professional obligations.
To better combat these practices, Burundi intends to consolidate the efforts already undertaken. The presentations made at the ceremony highlighted the progress made in strengthening the legal and institutional framework, monitoring and budgetary and administrative reforms. The implementation of the strategy aims to integrate these efforts into enhanced action against corruption and economic malfeasance.
The Head of State also stressed the need to make public resources management more understandable to citizens, informing them of their origin and use. This should help to strengthen citizen vigilance and encourage people to participate in the preservation of public heritage.
This participation will be encouraged to the hills, where joint anti-corruption committees will be mobilized to increase awareness. A three-month national campaign was also announced to promote responsible behaviour and strengthen the culture of integrity in different sectors of society.
The ceremony brought together officials from public institutions, representatives of the defence and security forces, the administration and judicial institutions, the Ombudsman, former Heads of State, members of the diplomatic and consular corps and representatives of religious organizations and civil society.
Through the implementation of this strategy, Burundi intends to strengthen prevention, improve control over public management and combat impunity. The challenge is to make the fight against corruption a collective commitment for the proper management of public resources and development of the country.
